What it is

Two reports come home about the same child in the same month, and both of them are accurate.

The teacher writes that he is a pleasure to have in class and reads well above his grade. You could write a different report: forty minutes to leave the house, two hours for twenty minutes of homework, and a child who can explain how a canal lock works but cannot find his shoes.

There is a name for a child who sits in that gap. Twice-exceptional means real ability alongside a real disability, and the difficult part is that each one hides the other. Ability covers the difficulty until the work gets hard enough to matter. The difficulty covers the ability until nobody looks for it.

Inside: • What the treatment guidelines actually recommend at each age, in their own words and with their own evidence grades • The largest long-term study of ADHD treatment, including the parts that both sides of the argument leave out • What parent training really changes when the people rating the outcome do not know which group the family was in • Five age chapters, preschool to high school: what changes, what the evidence supports, three things to do this week • Four tools at the back: the first appointment, the school meeting, the weekly reset, and when to worry about something else

What is left out, and named. The sugar story, with the meta-analysis of twenty-three controlled studies that found nothing. The claim that bright children are routinely misdiagnosed, which is widely repeated and has never been measured. And any recommendation about whether your child should take medication, which is not a decision a book can make.

What "sourced" means here. Nineteen references, each marked in the text and listed at the back with journal, year and page. Two national guidelines are reported side by side, including where they disagree. One section near the end is headed with what the book cannot tell you.

A rewritten second edition. The first edition advised against medication in the primary school years without citing anything, and repeated the sugar myth. Neither is in this one.
