What it is
Most books about Appalachian folklore begin with the words "locals say." This one gives you the court records. You have read the other ones. Forty legends, two paragraphs each, every story introduced by an anonymous source that cannot be checked. You finish the book unable to tell the difference between a legend with a courthouse file behind it and one somebody invented for a website in 1994.
Primeval Appalachian Folklore takes the opposite approach. Every story here comes with a county, a date, and wherever possible the name of the person who told it and the name of the person who wrote it down.
Inside you will find:The 1897 West Virginia murder trial where a dead woman testified through her mother — and the twist almost every retelling gets backwardThe geologist who climbed Roan Mountain in 1878 to debunk the ghost choir, and admitted in print that he had failedWhat the 1922 federal report on the Brown Mountain lights actually found, and why almost nobody has read itThe women called witches who were the only doctors for forty miles, and the rule that made their knowledge impossible to sellWhy the Cherokee said the mountains were shaped by an exhausted bird, and what happened to the priesthood the people rose up and destroyedThe coal towns that emptied overnight, and the difference between a curse and a lease running outWhere the popular version is wrong, this book corrects it — including several claims repeated in nearly every book on the subject. Where the record is genuinely thin, it says so. What is left is a region far stranger than the one in the campfire stories, and all of it is on a map you can drive.
SECOND EDITION — FULLY REVISED AND EXPANDEDThis edition is a complete rewrite. The text has been expanded substantially over the first edition, every chapter rebuilt around primary sources — James Mooney, the Bureau of American Ethnology, U.S. Geological Survey reports, trial transcripts, and period newspapers — with a full chronology and bibliography added at the back.
For readers of regional history, true hauntings, mountain culture, and anyone who has ever wanted to know which parts actually happened.
The truth turned out to be stranger than the legend.
